The answer is YES. I started my training in 2008 and was actually inspired to make my first piece of kenpo jewelry after reading Ed Parker's book Infinite Insights, Volume 4. The book includes a chapter all about the Universal Pattern. I made the very first pendant by hand, as an experiment in 2012. I ended up gifting that pendant to a very fine martial artist. I will reveal who in my next blog post!
Since I began training in American Kenpo, there have been so many positive changes in my life. I feel better, look better, have more confidence, and I am much more focused on my goals. It also made me realize how important it is to be a serious student, not only of the system, but of life in general. Always be a student, never stop learning new things. I reevaluated many things I was not happy with or felt I was not giving enough attention to in my life, and was able to put what was really important into perspective. It has been an interesting journey; you think you are going to learn a martial art and get in shape, make new friends and become a good fighter.... But what I found is that yes, you learn those things, but you also learn who you really are and what you really want to be, and how you want to live your life.
Things are much more simple now. I don't live to work, I don't sweat the small stuff and I don't worry about tomorrow. I do the things I love to do, make jewelry, train hard, go to bed early and spend every free moment with my family and close friends. I realize that it is important to make a living, and provide for my family, and have been lucky enough to find a way to do that WITH kenpo, not DESPITE kenpo. We all make sacrifices as martial arts students, but we can find a way to not sacrifice our happiness and our desire to train, learn and improve ourselves.
YES. I do train and I will always train in Kenpo. ~Cristina
